Walking and Thinking ....

Its funny the things you think about while walking. Especially when walking in the woods.

My favorite local place to walk is around a pond not too far from my house. It has a gentle walking trail that is about a mile around. It is a natural trail, not paved, but cleared for the most part. You have to look out for the occasional root, acorns or leaves that can cause your foot to stumble if you are not careful, but overall it is an easy trail to walk that takes you gently up and down as you go around the whole pond. A footbridge goes across one side, and the other is graced with a dam and mill with a waterwheel, that is still actually used to grind cornmeal from time to time.I find this place to be most peaceful, as it is a nature preserve, which means, no bikes and not dogs. Just foot traffic of bird/nature watchers, fishermen, and photographers capturing happy families with the backdrop of natures beauty.

I have found I like to walk without headphones when walking this particular trail. There is something about the sounds of nature that are comforting and calming. Walking near water, hearing the birds and the sounds of the squirrels in the leaves, the crunch of leaves under your feet and the breeze as it moves through the trees. Even though you can still hear the sounds of cars on the roadway not far away, the sounds of nature are healing. There is just something about foot falls on the earth that resonate with my soul and bring me closer to the one who created it all.
